WHY USAGE OF BULBOUS BOW IS SLOWLY STARTED REDUCING IN MODERN SHIP DESIGNS

Bulbous bows are the underwater part of the bow. Because of their influence on the vessel’s wave resistance, their design has a significant impact on the vessel's hydrodynamic efficiency.

Bulbous was reducing the skin resistance only at one fixed speed and at MCR speed or contractual speed for which the ship was built.

Considering ships operating at reduced speeds due to reducing carbon footprint, the speed range for which the bulbous bow was built doesn't pose any use.

Thus the need for a bulbous bow is slowly getting decreased. Thereby eliminating the bulbous bow altogether from the vessels as it is proving no help to reduce skin resistance but adding resistance and weight unnecessarily to the vessel.

Some modern designs have also been bought up which help to reduce drag at the reduced speed.

Thus significantly reducing fuel consumption along with reduced carbon dioxide emission with improved design compensating with slow steaming.
